Poor Service Indeed.
Family lives in the neighborhood and has always supported the local Joe's Diner. Food has been generally good and prices high but reasonable for supporting local farmers.
Every few months, Joe's has coupons in the Premium Shopping Guide. We usually use the Buy One Get One Free coupon that requires you purchase two beverages as well. The coupon this month also stated there was a 19% gratuity, however we were ordering take out. We called to confirm the coupon is valid for take out, which it was. No where on it does it say dine-in only, but apparently it is implied in the gratuity "clause".
Went to pick-up the order after the 15 minute estimate had expired and ended up waiting an additional 15 minutes. Left with the order only to find out they forgot to give us the beverages we ordered. The server was polite, but unflinching on charging us 19% gratuity on a TAKE OUT order. The percentage was applied on the total and not the subtotal, which is also completely inappropriate. We even called to express our displeasure with the gratuity charge to which they said we could pay the full price and use the coupon later or just pay the gratuity. Having previously worked as a server, NEVER has this been the case with takeout orders.
The burgers we ordered were over $16 dollars and not even cooked as we requested.
We are really disappointed because, as expensive as Santa Fe is, we love supporting local establishments. Especially those that support our local farmers. This alone should not sell Joe's DIner. They need to improve their service and menu before we consider returning.
you are embarrassing.
The next time people visit from out of town, I will not talk them into trying this local establishment. We would have been better off spending half the money and getting larger and tastier food portions somewhere else.
In the very least the service could have been half way decent. It can be described as unfriendly and slow. If Santa Fe wants to grow it's economy and bring in more tourists, this is NOT the example to follow.
Your food is WAY over priced and some of your wait staff are a joke.
All visitors and tourists I know will be going elsewhere.
Take it easy, Joes.
At Joe's Diner, be prepared....
...to be disappointed by the service...
Obviously, there are those 5 stars (employees??? Family???) out there that will disagree, but this is our experience for a Saturday evening out... turning into the ultimate insult.
I give credit where credit is due. The food was good.
Service was non-existent. We placed our order for a liver pate' with an onion marmalade and a mussels appetizer and salad.
Having our heart and mouth set on the pate' and I LOVE mussels... they never arrived. Nor did the salads.
The runner arrived with our entrees: 2 prime rib cuts (small portioned by my gauge) with a "twice" baked potato that didn't get baked the 2nd time. Both while small, were quite tasty.
Our waitress NEVER returned to our table (probably because she knew she screwed up) except to show us our choices for dessert (declined) and our check.
Total bill for our evening $57.10. (no alcohol)
I wrote of our disappointment on the back of our charge slip in three simple words: Won't be back.
Please, if you go, don't get your hopes up about the service. The "Chef" (Rowland) may be a good "cook", but has a LOT to learn about service to those that pay his bills...
In my HUMBLE opinion
My favorite stop in Santa Fe HANDS DOWN!. Any time I come through Santa Fe, I always stop at Joe's Diner! The food is exceptional and the service is always wonderful. The prices are incredibly reasonable and I love the fact that they use fresh ingredients. I think the other reviews are probably from the competition in town because I have never had a bad meal here, nor have any of the people I traveled with. Roland even remembered us when we came back almost a year later! I will continue to come to Joe's anytime I'm around...even if I'm not stopping in Santa Fe to stay. It's just consistently great and I love the atmosphere!
The cheese on the pizza is fake, the waitstaff is THE WORST I have ever encountered, the food is extremely over priced and NOT good, and the portion sizes are small (might not be that bad of a thing because the food is so gross you won't eat everything that is on your plate anyway)! HORRIBLE! Do not eat here!
How is it possible that this place is even still in business?!
Terrible service and uncaring attitude.
My husband and I recently ate at Joe's Diner one evening. The restaurant was about 1/3 full. We were seated in a booth and then forgotten about for about 25 minutes with no water delivered and no flatware on the table. The chef/owner Roland Richter was engaged in an animated conversation with a couple at a nearby table. He did not know them and the discussion appeared trivial and unrelated to food. We signalled him to come over which he did reluctantly. We said that we had not received any water and that no one had approached us to get our order. He did not apologize and asked us what we wanted. He was in such a hurry to get back to his conversation that he did not write down the order so when our appetizers arrived about 10 minutes later they were not what we had ordered. We then waited a further 10 minutes for the correct appetizer. The entree a salad with grilled salmon arrived later with the salmon cooked on the outside and raw on the inside. By that time we were too disheartened to even send it back or to complain.
The big problem with this restaurant is that Roland really does not care about his customers. We have eaten there in the past and the food is very uneven in quality. He does not seem to exercise any quality control in the kitchen. Worse yet is that he takes no interest in observing whether customers are being attended to and are satisfied with their meals. In a normal situation one might expect a restaurant owner to attempt to mollify unhappy customers with a complimentary dessert or some adjustment to the bill, but he did not do that in our case. Nor indeed did he return to inquire whether our meal was satisfactory. Roland, however, whenever we have been there spends his time chit chatting with one table for his own entertainment while everyone else dining there is neglected. This poor attitude is picked up by the wait staff who often exhibit a similar contempt and neglect for diners. When we left the restaurant after an unnecessarily protracted meal the wait staff were gathered around a TV in the bar area no doubt neglecting other diners.
Sometimes the food and service are satisfactory at Joe's diner, but that is rare. If the prices were low one could make some sort of allowance. However, if one orders one of the daily specials, the total cost can approach that of many of the infinitely better Plaza area restaurants in Santa Fe where the food is better and customers get courteous attention. I would recommend avoidance of Joe's Diner at all costs. Roland Rchter should get out of the restaurant business and work in an area that does not require interaction with the general public.
just awful. Ugh. Just avoid this place. It's completely awful. I'm not kidding. The service is ridiculously bad, the menu is overpriced, and the food is just gross. And their claims of using fresh organic ingredients and their sale of Michael Pollan's book in the foyer seem like just a Santa Fe-centric marketing ruse. Pollan would not approve of this place. Trust me.
Diner Whiner. Joe's still has lots to learn. Ten of us were there recently on a slow night. We ordered and shortly thereafter our food began coming out, dish by dish by dish, long before our drinks ever showed up. Several people finished their meals before others received theirs. This is totally unacceptable and we do not plan to return.
Unfortunately I had done takeout and was unable to return my food.
The food was terribly prepared. I asked for medium scrambled eggs and received wet runny scrambled eggs. My friend also saw the eggs and was appalled. I also ordered steak with my eggs, which was very bland. It's a shame I've ordered steak and eggs at least 3 times before and never had a problem with medium scrambled eggs. Once the steak was delicious. I talked to the Owner, Roland from Germany. Who said he oversaw that meal and the meal was prepared perfectly. After explaining to the owner he had no idea what he was talking about, he eventually said he would watch it more. But he did not care about my experience. My friend also paid for food with the takeout order and complained the chicken was overcooked. We told the owner we got a $10 meal for $40, he showed no evidence of caring and did not offer our money back, any free food or even a 10 percent discount on our next meal. My opinion, this owner is just a cheap dog trying to take money our of Santa Fe. We will not be going back because of his poor attitude.
the worst service.
Today we went to Joe's for a bite to eat. We arrived at 3:05. We were told by the young man with the white shirt, military-looking haircut, and tie, that the brunch menu was still being served. We would have gladly ordered from the regular menu, but when he said we had time to order from the specials.
The guy with the tie, who was at the counter almost the entire time, has some real problems. He did not work the entire time. I overheard him talking to a teen-age boy who brought our bread (VERY nice young man.) He was telling this kid how he has seen some "HOT" girls. He went on to describe the women in great and offensive detail, and then told the kid how he had grabbed one of their "asses" and when the girls turned around to see who had violated her, and the Joe's employee said he looked the other way. It was a disgusting story. I was sorry the teen age boy had to hear it. The older guy (20's - 30's?) with the tie, I suppose, was trying to impress ? the teen ager. Strange in itself.
Then he came to our table to tell us (40 minutes after we ordered!) that the brunch menu was no longer being served. The waiter had been out just 10 minutes prior to ask what kind of chile we wanted on the Rancheros. The guy with the tie said they were understaffed. There were at least 6 - 7 employees on staff. There were only 2 of us and 4 other people eating. It was a ridiculous excuse. I demanded the check and we left.
I think the most upsetting part of the experience was his vile story told to the teen age boy. Technically, he described a criminal offense. I would not want a guy like this on my pay role.
He did not apologize and had quite a rude attitude. I did not want to wait another 40 minutes to be served. We were charged over $15. For 2 coffees and 2 small cups of soup. I left the waiter a tip since it was not his fault, and left hungry and 20 dollars lighter.
I will not be back to Joe's.
