If you are a foodie, you must eat here ! – I usually start with the positive, but here I am going to start with the negative. The only thing really negative was the portion size. The portions were enormous. Unless you are a hot-dog eating contest winner, I would only order two courses.
The entrance, the decor, the vibe, the life of the restaurant was exhilarating ! The owners have clearly paid attention to each detail from linen selection, chair selection, art, flooring and lighting. All of this does not go unnoticed as every part of it adds to the experience.
We started with the roast corn soup which was a special. It stayed true to the flavor of corn without adulterating it with too much seasoning. I then had the green miso sea bass. This was served over their home made ramen noodles. I would go back just to have their ramen noodles. They offer this as a side. If your meal does not come with them, I would order them to split amongst the table. None of us could finish our entrees if we had any chance of eating desert so we stopped and left half of our entrees in order that we could eat a few bites of desert. The deserts did not match the quality of the entrees, but they were still good. Our table ordered the chocolate ganache cake which was good, not too sweet and served with strawberry based condiments. We also ordered the "creamsicle" cake. This was really good but we could not finish it because we were too full. This restaurant is a must if you are going to be in Santa Fe. The bill was only $220 for three of us. We don't drink though so you would have to add in alcohol if consumed. Our server wasn't the best but the food and experience made up for it.
great staff, cool location – staff is very accomodating but the food isn't worth the coin
Real Disappointement – The meal started with the waiter dropping drinks down my back. They did offer to clean my clothes-if I dropped them off at the restaurant. The drinks were comped, but we were never told this-leaving a feeling upset for the rest of the meal. Later we were served a bottle of wine that had gone bad, as it was the last one of it's type a replacement was offered- for $14 more. My steak was then brought to me only vaguely cooked (I ordered medium rare) it was still fleshy red & cold with only a milimeter of cooked meat on the edges. After sending it back I was asked it if was "to my liking now" as if I had made a mistake in the ordering. Food was dropped onto the table in serving, then picked up using hands & placed back on to the plate -eeew.
Great food! – My wife and I just got back from Santa Fe. We had dinner one evening at Geronimo and it was fantastic! My wife had the scallops and I had the elk loin. Both dishes were prepared perfectly. They had a very nice wine list. The service was excellent. The next time we visit Santa Fe we will definitely go back to Geronimo.
One of the Best ! – I have eaten at many fine establishments and this is one of them. Excellent service, fantastic dishes and a wonderful setting. This is the one restaurant I will definitely return to when I am back in town !!
Great Service and Food – My husband and I love coming to this restaurant. If you are coming to Santa Fe this is the best place to go for great service and food. It is not cheap but nothing really great is in Santa Fe.
Didn't match the hype – To preface, my wife and I have eaten in some of the finest restaurants San Francisco, Chicago, NYC, France and places between have to offer. Point being, we don?t think that Applebee?s is fine dining. We dress well, are unfailingly polite to servers and tip nicely. Point being, we know good from so-so.
Geronimo came with high recs. I guess it?s fine if you are a regular. Outlanders without connections, forget it!
We were seated promptly. (We had a reservation a month out.) But after viewing the table we got, I can see why?they were saving this one for the rubes! Jammed next to a little in-wall roaring fireplace making the oxygen-starved air worse -- and so close to the table behind us that my wife mashed a finger and banged a knee while shoving her chair in so waiters could squeeze around her. Nice start!
Since we were literally inches from the entryway to the kitchen and the restrooms, we had a parade of people brushing our table every few seconds. (Wife started timing it.)
Wine list? Nice, but high markup.
Food? For the kind of rep Geronimo aspires to, I?d give them a B+. Ten places in our hometown consistently beat this food quality. I had an entree of swordfish and short ribs on the same plate (such a strange idea I had to try it) ? interesting texture contrast, but so-so on flavors. Wife?s lobster and salmon entree: flavors not married in meaningful way. The plate for her entree was a curved narrow thing -- forced her to use all her hand-eye coordination to keep the ingredients from sliding off. We felt so stressed by end of meal that we passed on dessert.
Servers? Very friendly.
Overall- More pretension than substance. We are perfectly willing to drop $300 or more for a high-end meal, but not for B+ food and a horrible table. There is no way a restaurant that gets this kind of hype should have a table like that for anyone and the food doesn?t match the prices.
Outstanding cuisine and elegant ambience are well worth the splurge at this Canyon Road institution. – The Scene
Housed in a restored adobe, this local favorite combines the comfort of a house and the classic elegance of a fine dining establishment. Local artwork adorns clean, white walls throughout a handful of rooms. Simple, but stunning decor is accented by low lighting and high-beamed ceilings. A fireplace topped by moose antlers and comfy, high-backed leather chairs create a cozy vibe. Service is professional and friendly.
Beautifully presented cuisine is infused with Southwest flavor for a divine dining experience. Sweet crab meat is tickled with red pepper in the delicate crab cake starter, while velvety ahi tuna, smoked salmon and avocado tartare mingles together seamlessly. Blissfully rich entrees include peppery elk tenderloin with applewood-smoked bacon, brandied mushroom sauce and a side of creamy, garlic potatoes. Lightly smoky grilled Maine lobster tails are punched up with a vibrant orange chili and garlic sauce that leaves lips tingling.
Well worth the splurge – Being from the NY area, I set a high bar for great restaurants. This met the test with flying colors. The food and service were fabulous, and the portions were larger than at many expensive restaurants. I had the $60 tasting menu (scallops appetizer, lobster entree) and we split the ample (and delicious) lime tart dessert. Service was exemplary. Only disappointments were an overpriced wine list and a minimalist decor.
doctorj – I don't have any problem paying for a meal that is worth it's price, but this was ridiculous. The atmosphere was very romantic, but the seating was within centimeters from other customers. The wait was in excess of 15 minutes, which we spent in the tiny lounge. The service was fair, and the food was slightly above average. If you are going to dine at Geronimo's, don't forget to arrive atleast 45 minutes early to find parking.
